大量的記憶卡使用FAT32，為了未來相容與它的先天限制，直接把 exFAT open source 給大家，讓大家用的更爽。

FAT檔案系統考慮當時電腦效能有限，所以未被複雜化，因此幾乎所有個人電腦的作業系統都支援。這特性使它成為理想的軟碟和記憶卡檔案系統，也適合用作不同作業系統中的資料交流。現在，一般所講的FAT專指FAT32。
FAT仍然是移動媒體所常用的一種檔案系統（CD和DVD是例外），軟碟使用的是FAT12，其他多數活動媒體用的是FAT32（如用於數位相機的快閃記憶卡和USB隨身碟，Windows格式化的預設選項仍為FAT32）。

These standards cover FAT12 and FAT16 with only short 8.3 filename support; long filenames with VFAT are partially patented.[8] According to Google Patents the "Common name space for long and short filenames"(US5758352A) status was expired in 2019, which may mean that patents expired completely.
